Microsoft have released an update rollup for the core printing components in Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Small Business Server 2011 (SBS 2011)

The following issues are resolved by this update rollup:

Picture Manager may stop responding when you open the “Printer Properties” dialog box in Picture Manager in a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or of Windows Vista – http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942914/

Lets start by taking a look under “c:\Users” if you find multiple TEMP.DOMAINNAME.XXX folders then read on.

You may see the following two events logged together in the Application Event Log on the SBS 2011 Server and both reference the DOMAINNAME\spwebapp

Log Name: Application

Event ID: 1500

Lvel: Error

Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. Check that you are connected to the network, and that your network is functioning correctly.

DETAIL – The system cannot find the file specified.

and

Log Name: Application

Source: User Profile Service

Event ID: 1501

Lvel: Error

Windows cannot create a temporary profile directory. This problem may be caused by insufficient security rights.

DETAIL – The system cannot find the file specified.

You may also see the following event logged in the System Event Log on the SBS 2011 Server

The Windows Process Activation Service failed to create a worker process for the application pool ‘SBS Sharepoint AppPool’. The data field contains the error number.

If you are seeing the above errors then you need to cut and paste all the TEMP.DOMAINNAME.XXX folders from “c:\Users” into a “new folder” on your desktop for example (you should not need these temp profiles again but it’s best to keep them to one side). Once you no longer have any of these folders in the “C:\users” directory we need to launch “Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager” from Administrative Tools and then expand the server and click on “Application Pools”. Once in “Application Pools” you need to stop the three highlighted Pools “SBS Sharepoint AppPool”, “SharePoint Central Administration v4” and “SharePoint Web Services Root”. Once all three are stopped wait about 10-20 seconds and then start these three stopped Pools.

Now that you have followed all these steps launch your web browser and try to navigate to http://companyweb and your SharePoint site should load correctly. Please note that the Companyweb SharePoint site might take 20-30 seconds to load the first time whilst the profile is re-created, after this it should be nice and fast.

32 Bit Applications that utilise NetBIOS API do not receive connection close notifications in Windows 7 64 Bit Edition, Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Small Business Server 2011

32 bit applications that utilise NetBIOS API do not receive connection close notifications in Windows 7 64 Bit Edition, Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Small Business Server 2011 and as a result they do not try to re-establish a session. Restarting the application will re-establish the session and recover from the issue.

This issue occurs because when the Netbios.sys driver receives data the driver does not convert the Network Connection Block NCB structure from 64 bit to 32 bit when the session has been dropped. A 32 bit application cannot understand the 64 bit NCB structure which is why the session cannot be re-established.

The Microsoft Knowledgebase article KB 2633667 provides further information on the issue and a Hotfix containing an updated version of the Netbios.sys driver that that corrects this particular issue http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2633667

Windows Server 2008 R2 and SBS 2011 RTM or SP1 – You may experience disk I/O performance issues with certain Intel Xeon Processors

You may experience disk I/O performance issues if your server contains an Intel Xeon Westmere-EX (10 Core) processor

This can occur because some of the I/O completion port objects are not cache-aligned. This behavior is what causes poor disk I/O performance.

You can resolve the issue by updating Ntoskrnl.exe and Ntkrnlpa.exe updated versions are available for download from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2545635
